# How an Insurance Claim Works for Water, Mold or Fire Damage

Filing a claim after water, mold or fire damage generally follows five steps: document the damage, open the claim with your insurer, have an adjuster inspect the property, review the scope and estimate, and complete approved repairs. Nevada Water Damage documents every stage with photos, moisture readings and a category assessment and bills most major insurers directly, though every policy and claim is different.

## Step 1: Stop the Damage and Document It

Before anything else, the priority is stopping the source of damage if it is safe to do so and getting a restoration crew on site to begin documentation. Photos and video taken before anything is moved, cleaned or removed become an important part of the claim record.

We photograph the affected areas, note the water category or the extent of fire and smoke damage, and record moisture readings from the first visit. This documentation is what your insurer and adjuster will reference throughout the claim, so starting it early matters, and it is also useful for you to keep your own copies as the claim moves forward.

## Step 2: Open the Claim With Your Insurance Company

Once the damage is documented, you or your agent contact your insurance company to open a claim. You will typically need your policy number, the date and cause of the damage, and a general description of what was affected.

Your insurer assigns a claim number and, in most cases, an adjuster to review the loss. We can share the documentation we have gathered to support this step, though the claim itself has to be filed by you or your agent.

## Step 3: The Adjuster's Inspection

An adjuster, either from the insurance company or an independent adjuster the company hires, visits the property to assess the damage and verify the cause. They compare what they find against the policy language to determine what is covered.

We can meet the adjuster on site and walk through our findings, moisture readings and scope of work, since a shared understanding of the damage tends to move a claim along faster. See our page on working with your adjuster for more on this step.

## Step 4: Scope of Work and Estimate

Based on the inspection, an estimate is prepared covering what needs to be dried, removed, cleaned or rebuilt. We prepare our own detailed scope and estimate using industry-standard documentation, which can be compared against the adjuster's estimate.

Where the two estimates differ, we explain and support our own written estimate and documentation with the adjuster, walking through the scope of work, moisture readings and photos behind it. The claim remains yours, and we are not public adjusters; we bill the insurer directly for approved work whenever your policy and claim allow it.

## Step 5: Approved Work and Repairs

Once the scope is approved, restoration work begins, extraction, structural drying, mold remediation or fire cleanup as needed, followed by rebuilding anything that had to be removed, such as drywall, flooring or cabinetry.

We keep documentation current throughout the job, including daily drying readings, so if the scope changes as work progresses, for example if a wall cavity turns out worse than the initial inspection showed, there is a clear record to support the update with your insurer.

## What to Have Ready When You File

Having a few basic details ready when you call your insurer can shorten the time it takes to open the claim and get an adjuster assigned. We can help gather or organize the restoration-side documentation at any point in the process.

- Your policy number and insurer's claims phone number
- The date and general cause of the damage, as far as you know it
- Photos or video taken before cleanup began
- Contact information for your restoration company
- Any prior claims history for the same property, if the insurer asks

Questions

## Straight answers

### Do I have to use the restoration company my insurance company recommends?

No. Your policy generally lets you choose your own restoration company; check your policy or ask your agent. We work with all major insurance companies and bill them directly whenever your policy and claim allow it, so working with us does not typically change how the claim itself is handled.

### How long does a water or fire damage claim usually take?

Timelines vary by insurer, the complexity of the damage and how quickly documentation is provided, so we cannot give a fixed number. Structural drying itself usually takes about three to five days, confirmed by daily moisture readings, and the overall claim can extend beyond that depending on repairs and the insurer's process.

### What if my claim is denied or only partially approved?

We cannot give legal advice about a denied claim, but we can provide our documentation, photos and moisture readings to support an appeal or a follow-up conversation with your adjuster. Many disputes come down to how the cause of loss is classified, which is worth reviewing carefully with your insurer.

### Is mold covered under the same claim as the water damage?

It depends on your policy and on whether the mold resulted from a covered, sudden event or from a longer-term, excluded issue. We document mold findings separately with photos and, when needed, moisture readings, so your insurer has what it needs to evaluate that part of the claim.

### Will you bill my insurance company directly?

In most cases, yes. We work with all major insurance carriers and bill them directly for approved work, which reduces how much you have to pay out of pocket while a claim is processed. Ask us about your specific policy and carrier when we do the inspection.
